HOW TO QUILT YOUR LOG CABIN QUILT
A Log Cabin quilt can be put together using one of MANY different settings – e.g. Barn Raising, Star, Fields
and Furrows, Zig Zag, etc. But no matter which setting you use for your log cabin quilt, there is a way you
can quilt it using your Ruler Foot, the Arc Template, and the Feather Template set – using the techniques
you already learned in the Basic Ruler Foot class and the Feather Borders class. It’s simple, and it’s
beautiful!
This class will be offered monthly January through June
PREREQUISITES: (these are a MUST)
• Beginning Ruler Work Class
• Ruler Work - Feathers Borders class
SUPPLIES LIST:
• Sewing Machine, plug, foot pedal
• Ruler Foot
• Sew Steady Arc Template (or other ruler-foot template with a long straight edge)
• Sew Steady Feathers Template set
• Two Log Cabin blocks, sandwiched with batting and backing (They can be attached to each other –
or separate. These are for practice.
They should be 8”, 10”, or 12” Log Cabin Blocks.
Another option is to draw out these blocks (in the size you plan to use in an actual quilt) on a solid
or tone-on-tone light or medium-colored piece of fabric. Again, you will need to draw two blocks –
either separate from each other or attached to each other, and sandwich them with batting and
backing. (Helpful if they are the size you plan to use in your actual quilt.)
• A 40 or 50 weight cotton or polyester quality (i.e. not “old”) thread with matching thread in the
bobbin (please have bobbin already filled when you come to class)
• #14 Topstitch needle (Janome and Elna machines need Janome Purple top or Red top needle)
Bring extra needle in case one breaks
• Snips/small scissors
• Seam Ripper
• Screwdriver that came with your machine
• Knee pedal for your machine (if you have one)
• Machinger (or other brand) Quilting Gloves
• Grid Glider (12 x 20 green for larger machines/extension tables or the smaller 11 x 14 peach-colored
grid glider for smaller machines/smaller extension tables) OR Supreme Super Slider
• Pencil for taking notes (we provide a class guide handout)
• Janome Users – bring your straight-stitch throat plate – NOT the HP straight-stitch throat plate, but
the other one that does not allow for zigzagging)
• If you have a Log Cabin quilt already made with 8, 10, or 12-inch blocks, bring it, and we’ll show you
how this method of quilting the Log Cabin block will work with your particular Log Cabin setting.
