BEGINNING RULER WORK

WHAT THE CLASS COVERS:

  • Setting up your machine for Ruler Foot Quilting
  • Why, when, and how to adjust the Ruler Foot
  • Discussing the differences between various Rulers and Templates and their uses
  • Using the Speed Control and foot pedal to “regulate” your speed for more even stitches
  • How to sit and hold the fabric and ruler at the same time as you quilt
  • Practicing stitching straight lines and curves with the Arc Ruler
  • Choosing one of three designs and using half of your quilt sandwich to stitch out that design

You can then trim that fabric sandwich square to 8” and bind it when you get home to use it as a hot pad - though not for oven use – as we don’t want to use Thinsulate in this class.

A class for machines that have the AutoLift feature will be separate from this class for machines without AutoLift – as the set-up for the two types of machines are completely different.

Our first class for the AutoLift machines will be in November.

PLEASE ARRIVE 15 minutes early in order to have your machine set up and supplies ready to start promptly at 10.

(We have a LOT to cover and will not be able to back track to catch you up if you are late.)

Once you master the basics of how to use the rulers and templates – you’ll be quilting your quilts on your domestic machine in no time at all!

SUPPLY LIST

SUPPLY LIST:

  • Fat Quarter Quilt Sandwich  that has been spray basted (BEST) or pinned - i.e. (2) 18” x 21” pieces of cotton fabric with cotton batting in between.
  • Plain colors or muslin would be best
  • Please have your quilt sandwich assembled before class
  • Spool of Cotton Thread (50 or 40 wt) in a bright color
  • Matching bobbin thread
  • A FRESH 90/14 Topstitch Needle (and a spare needle) (The Topstitch needle is a MUST!)
  • Tweezers (VERY IMPORTANT!)
  • Extension Table (a MUST!)
  • Ruler Foot (a MUST!)

You’ll need to know whether your sewing machine is a low shank or a high shank to purchase the correct ruler foot

Your options are usually a ruler foot made by the manufacturer of your sewing machine (BEST) – or Sew Steady also makes a good aftermarket ruler foot

  • The Westalee 12” Arc Ruler (it is 6” long but is called a 12” because it makes a 12” circle) (a MUST!)

Again, you’ll need to know whether your machine is a low or high shank as that affects the thickness of the rulers and templates you purchase for Ruler Quilting.

  • A Frixion pen (or Clover Chalk pen with a color of chalk you can see on your fabric)
  • An 8.5+ inch Ruler (square or oblong would be best)
  • An 11” x 17” Super Slider (if you have one – they really do make things easier)
  • Quilting gloves (I like Machingers) - or gardening gloves that have tacky fingers. They make a WORLD of difference.
  • Small Scissors
  • Seam Ripper

Cynthia’s carries all items (except fabric and batting) – although they may be in limited supply – so purchase or order them quickly so you’ll have them in time for the class.
Cynthia’s only carries packages of Frixion type pens – no singles. The Quilt Basket carries single pens.
